The Curious Philomathic is an independent publishing house founded by author and storyteller Louise A. Shaw.

In 2021, Louise began her publishing journey by submitting the manuscripts of two children’s books to several traditional publishers in London. Within weeks, she received five publishing offers—an exciting moment for any new writer. However, on closer inspection of the contracts, she discovered something deeply unsettling: traditional publishing often requires authors to sign away their copyright ownership, not just for the duration of the contract, but indefinitely.

This revelation was a turning point. Louise realised that while many writers dream of being published, few fully understand the hidden costs and limitations tied into conventional contracts. Determined to find another path, she began exploring independent publishing as a way to maintain full creative control, protect copyright, and still bring high-quality books to market.

After navigating the complex world of indie publishing—learning everything from editing and design to marketing and distribution—Louise founded The Curious Philomathic Publishing House. Its mission is simple:
